Choosing an error-correction level

Error correction helps a scanner reconstruct some missing or damaged QR code data. Higher levels add redundancy, but they also make the pattern denser for the same content.

L – Low

Produces the least dense pattern and can suit clean digital presentation or controlled printing where the code will not be obstructed.

M – Medium

Provides a balanced starting point for most uses and remains the default in this generator.

Q – Quartile

Adds more redundancy and can be useful when moderate wear, imperfect printing or a small logo is expected.

H – High

Provides the greatest correction of the available levels, but creates the densest pattern and may require a larger printed code.

A higher level cannot guarantee successful scanning. Logos cover part of the pattern and may justify Q or H, but the finished code still needs to be tested in its actual size and setting.

Guidance for reliable scanning and printing

Scanning depends on the encoded content, design, output size, printing and the device being used. These practical checks reduce avoidable problems.

Use strong contrast

Use a dark QR pattern on a light, even background. Low contrast and busy backgrounds can make recognition more difficult.

Keep clear space around the code

Leave an empty margin around all four sides. Do not place text, borders or other graphics directly against the QR pattern.

Keep the payload concise

Long content produces a denser QR code, and the encoded content is limited to 1,000 bytes. Use concise text and URLs where possible, especially for small printed output.

Choose a suitable print size

The necessary size depends on scanning distance, payload density and print quality. Print a sample at the intended size instead of relying on one universal minimum.

Verify important content

Check URLs, contact details, Wi-Fi credentials and payment information carefully before distributing or printing the QR code.

Test the final output

Test the downloaded or printed version in its actual context and, where relevant, with more than one device or scanning app.
